This large sculptured canvas was my first experiment with making the canvas shape not just buldge but also turn in on itself. The piece portrays a weighty man in a rumpled whyte shirt and tan khaki shorts sitting on a curb just above a street drain. Masks are being carried into the drain below him by a rush of blue water. The sense that water is flowing down into a dark space below is heightened by the jutting edge of the man’s leg which rises at least six inches from the canvas below. The man has plucked out and wears a white mask. Its expression is that of relief and of satisfaction. The only clue as to the man’s expression is by the ‘ta-da’ posture of his hands which appear dainty at the end of tangled elegantly elongated arms.
