| There are numerous ‘Mother and Child’ paintings in history. As primary caregiver for our son and to reflect the trend I see in those other parental partnerships around me, I felt the need to create a ‘Father and Child’ painting. The father’s left face appears tired and vacant. The right side is surprised, angry and curious depending on which areas you focus on together. It is a large piece and the facial features are widely spread making this both more difficult and intriguing. The father holds a puppeteer’s cross with his left hand in the foreground and the strings reach into the painting to the cradling right arm and hand. The child is swadled in beige cloth. The father’s casual, longsleeve shirt is a rusty brown. The child appears to be knocking off one shell-like mask as he shields himself from the mask on a stick he holds with his other hand. This mask is large and pink almost like a big candy. These characters sit on a pale blue striped couch. We see some wooden railing as if they are on an outside porch. A green field, a ridge of green trees and a soft blue sky complete the background. |
