Illustrator School Visits by Nathan Jensen

Young Nathan Jensen
One of my more vivid memories of kindergarten is when a ventriloquist came to visit our classroom. I remember being fascinated by ventriloquism as a result. I even had my own puppet that looked like Edgar Bergen's Charlie McCarthy.

I didn't grow up to be a ventriloquist.
Today I am an artist. I create oil paintings, murals, animated films and best of all children's storybook illustrations.

I'm happy to now be visiting classrooms myself and meeting the next generation.
- Perhaps, one child and hopefully many will remember my visit vividly.
- Perhaps, he or she will be fascinated by art and be driven to explore and create.
- Perhaps, one child might grow up to live a career as an artist.
--- Or perhaps instead becomes a highly creative scientist, engineer or astronaut still remembering and being inspired by that visit by an artist in Kindergarten class who said,
"You can do anything you dream to do. It just takes practice, practice, practice."

"Making of a Picture Book"

Nathan Jensen's 30 minute presentation steps lively through the process of turning the words of an author into a colorful and entertaining children's picture book.

Jensen utilizes colored shapes, the story's text, library references and student's input to create his character.

He then delivers a high speed
magic and media performance
of the painting of his pictures.
The presentation concludes with an animated and insightful reading of the story followed by a question and answer period
with the class, teachers and librarian.

Just to reiterate... both Ms. Tuttle (school librarian) and I agreed... Your demonstrations was so well done!
Your "step process" was very well done with the use of 'different parts/pieces revealed' added to the interest and engagement of students. You adjusted your demonstration appropriately for the different age audiences.
and Especially...
- pointing out that your pictures "also" present words and/or further understanding of the text (emergent/early readers really "do" depend on pictures for reading text in many ways)
- going to the library to research for ideas and/or accuracy in drawing
- how "shapes" are an initial part of the process in developing pictures
- when you were young, you practiced and practiced and improved, etc.
Thanks again!!! Teachers and students have been expressing how much they enjoyed it.
